Naveed Sattar

Naveed Sattar graduated from Glasgow University in 1990 and was appointed Professor of Metabolic Medicine in 2005. He is interested in the causes, screening and prevention of heart disease, diabetes and obesity, and has accumulated expertise in the pathways linking different metabolic / inflammatory diseases. Such expertise allied to excellent resources for large scale biomarker work in his group has attracted work on several internationally recognised cohorts and trials (e.g. WOSCOPS, PROSPER, BRHS, BWHHS, ASCOT, ALSPAC, Reykjavik, etc) and led to some challenging papers on topical issues (e.g. metabolic syndrome). He also contributes to the Emerging Risk Factor Collaboration (ERFC) and to relevant phenotypic studies and trials in diabetes, obesity and CVD. Naveed has published over 200 original papers and over 20 chapters, received several national awards for his research and presented at numerous international symposia. He chaired the conference organising committee for the 2010 annual Diabetes UK meeting, and was recently recruited to the British Heart Foundation project grants committee. He also chaired the treatment subgroup for the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network (SIGN) on obesity and contributes to several other clinical guidelines.
