August 2007 cover

The cover image shows a section through the cerebellum of the brain. The cerebellar cortex is composed of two layers: an outer molecular layer (yellow) and an inner granular layer (brown). Together they make up grey matter, which contains the highly folded central core of the cerebellum. This core is white matter (orange) and contains densely-packed nerve fibres. In the present issue of Diabetologia (50: 1763-1769) Wessels et al. report that patients with diabetes and a microvascular complication had a significantly smaller white matter volume than nondiabetic controls and that smaller white matter volume was associated with poorer cognitive performance.
