The cover image shows red endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) adhering to green human umbilical vein endothelial cells (artificial colours, 2000x magnification). EPCs provide a circulating reservoir for replacement of damaged endothelium. Their adhesion to the mature endothelial layer is a key event in maintenance of endothelial homeostasis. Functional or quantitative abnormalities of EPCs herald the development of endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis in diabetes and prediabetes.
