The cover picture shows a light micrograph of nerve cells (neurons) with immunofluorescent staining. The stains show neurites (either axons or dendrites) connecting nerve cell bodies. In the present issue of Diabetologia (51: 562-566) Davis et al. report that lipid-lowering therapy (statins and fibrates) may protect against diabetes-associated damage to peripheral sensory nerves independently of their effects on macrovascular disease.
