The cover picture shows computer artwork of two chromosomes with highlighting of the telomeres. Telomeres are located at both ends of the chromosome and serve to protect the DNA during replication. In the present issue of Diabetologia (53: 45-48) Astrup et al. demonstrate that short telomere length is associated with all-cause mortality in patients with type 1 diabetes. However, the authors found no difference in telomere length between patients with or without diabetic nephropathy.
