The cover picture shows a Papago Indian, representative of Native peoples throughout the world who frequently suffer from health disparities, particularly diabetes mellitus. Participatory research is required to advance understanding of the causes of these disparities. The Pima Indians of Arizona have participated in medical research for more than 40 years: their involvement has contributed greatly to the current understanding of the causes of type 2 diabetes not only amongst themselves, but also in other populations. In the present issue of Diabetologia (53: 1349-1353), Bian et al. report that ACAD10 variation in Pima Indians may increase susceptibility to type 2 diabetes by impairing insulin sensitivity via abnormal lipid oxidation.
