Women with type 1 diabetes have similar odds of attaining a positive outcome of pregnancy as women without diabetes, although adapting insulin doses to requirements remains challenging. Women with gestational diabetes have been identified as being the group with the highest risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In the present issue of Diabetologia two papers focus on these two groups of women confronted with diabetes in pregnancy. GarcĂa-Patterson et al. (53: 446-451) report on the changes in insulin requirements during pregnancy in women with type 1 diabetes, while Ekelund et al. (53: 452-457) report on the prediction of risk of development of type 2 diabetes in later life based on variables measured during pregnancy.
