The cover picture shows a false-colour transmission electron micrograph of rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) (parallel yellow structures) in a tissue culture cell. The large red bodies are lysosomes. Defects in ER function that lead to ER stress have been associated with different pathologies. In the present issue of Diabetologia (53: 955-965) Raciti et al. report that ER stress is responsible for glucotoxicity-induced insulin-resistance in skeletal muscle cells, providing a further insight into the role of ER stress in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes.
