The cover picture shows a polarised light photomicrograph of crystalline vitamin D. In the present issue of Diabetologia (54:2077−2081) Cheng et al. demonstrate that activated vitamin D can both prevent and reverse the abnormal overactivity of the renin-angiotensin system found in pancreatic islets under hyperglycaemic conditions.
