The cover shows a photograph of a marble bust of Hypnos (Somnus; dated 117−138 CE), the god of sleep (currently held in the National Museum of Rome). Sleep disturbances have been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In the present issue of Diabetologia (54: 1375−1378), Olsson et al. provide evidence that variation in the gene encoding melatonin receptor 1B (MTNR1B) is not a primary cause of the association between sleep disturbances and type 2 diabetes.
